Catwalks of the world

Look what the cat dragged in…

Or, should I say, strutted in, flaunted, pouted, turned on one heel and made the fashionistas of the world salivate over before making a determined retreat? It’s time for a review of what’s hot and what’s not in the world of ready-to-wear fashion. Fresh from the catwalks of international fashion weeks and now in London’s high street boutiques, let’s have a look at what everyone’s going gah-gah about in the UK for the upcoming spring…

It’s far from anarchy in the UK, but the latest edgy urban streetwear from Maison Martin Margiela is about as chic-punk as it gets for those who love their nightlife. Their collection of designer dresses, jackets and vests is lifestyle, but in two mutual yet independent concepts: life and style. The season’s penchant for drapery is evident nonetheless, adding a feminine touch to many pieces.

Across the board, from the powerful structured tailored look to the spring floral prints, a soft touch is the in thing. Even when dressing sharp for the office, tone it down with neutral colours and don’t be afraid of a few girly ruffles or frills. That’s not to say to be a push-over. Top off the look with sky-high heels (this is when we can’t sing the praises of Christian Louboutin too highly!) and a splash of confident colour from Chloe.

Yet when it comes to this season’s floral trend, too much colour is not enough! Don’t be afraid to clash bright floral prints, don’t shy away from vivid designer handbags, and wear your flowers loud and proud! Mix and match retro design, watercolour flow, or vibrant geometrics for the ultimate in style.

For work or play, night or day; the world’s biggest names in design have got it all covered this season. Turning heads in London, dropping jaws the world over – this is a season of “must-haves” to suit all tastes!

Cheap Costumes

Are you looking down the barrel of another year without an invitation to Heidi Klum’s Halloween Party arriving in your mailbox? Never been nominated for an Academy Award (and not likely to be in this lifetime)? Don’t let it get you down. Like the rest of us mere mortals lucky to make it onto an x-, y- or z-list bash, an evening of celebrity swank is not beyond us.

Enter the magical world of the masquerade, the crazy contingent of the costumed, the frivolous fun of fancy dress. Emulating the rich and famous – or even just having a jaunt dressed up as someone else – has never been easier! Themes and fancy dress costumes are only limited by your imagination… and with a little help from party supplies experts and the celebs themselves, you’re well on the way to a fantastic soiree and an enviable costume that will surely be worth noting down in the pages of haute couture history.

Whether you chose to rent or buy costume, be sure to add that certain personal touch. Creative or risqué – it’ll be bound to get people talking and recalling the outfit in future years. By way of a clue (and don’t just leave it to a Christina Aguilera naughty nurse or Paris Hilton playboy bunny), if you’ve got it, flaunt it. Not afraid to show a bit of skin? Great. Confident to strut in keyhole dresses, corsets, garters, fishnets, boas, petticoats, ribbons, lace or with a Bo Peep staff? Even better! Everyone loves nasty, kitsch and cheap Halloween costumes. A little tacky, a little classy – it’s a delicate balance – but it works for either the guys or the gals, if you know what I mean!

If all else fails, raise the celebrity calibre of the evening with a few strategically placed celebrities cardboard cutouts and prepare to spend an evening amongst the stars!

Rakhi set to inspire cricket fans

rakhi_sawant.jpg
Rakhi Sawant will portray the role of a dumb bimbette who is all into fashion and gloss and has no clue about cricket. As in, she is going to be herself in this new Cricket show in the Television Channel, Filmy. The name will be Rakhee ke Bouncers. The coincidence sure is a sixer, but how much more obvious can they get? The show is going to be such a hit, the target audience can only be a guess and she is definitely on the way to becoming a possible choice for some insane director in Hollywood to cast the Indian essence in their movies.

Kareena and Shahid’s Prison Break

kareena_kapoor.jpg
It is showering weird couples in Bollywood. Ok, I made that up to start this entry, but the couple I am going to talk about is a little weird. Kareena and Shahid spend all their idle time watching American sitcoms. Lately, they have been hooked on to TV show, Prison Break. Seems every little spare time they get, they grab a DVD player and watch the damn show. Examples are plenty where the two are known to have been witnessed watching this for hours at end. This would not even pass for puppy love, for crying out loud!

Perizaad’s Just Married

perizaad_zorabian.jpg
How many of us like to be second fiddle to someone? Not many, I bet. Perizaad didn’t mind the honours recently when she signed up for Pritish Nandy’s movie Just Married. Reasons are varied. One, because she just got married, in real. And two, because the filmmaker was responsible for her first break and mega hit, Bollywood Calling where she played a freak actress with some gora dude. But personally, we could go with the conclusion that she didn’t want to sit idle at home after marriage and grow fat.

Waiting and waiting, Abhishwarya are waiting

abhi_aish.jpg
You are going to hear a lot on this for days to come until the main wedding date. So, might as well get used to the idea that we are going to take you step by step on the procedures of the Abhishek-Aishwarya wedding saga. Element of interest is not our concern as long as it is the two individuals in question. Their reputation has spoken so far and in some sadistic manner half the population is waiting to see the day they split rather than the day they unite.

Shahrukh to promote whiskey

shah_rukh.jpg
Shahrukh Khan is going to endorse Radico's new liquor brand, Masterstroke Deluxe Whiskey. Everyone is aware of the man's smoking habits and with this new advertisement; he is sure going to need to grab his fans by their necks to consider him God still. He hasn't been doing very well with his talk show anyway. He has messed the whole setup, theme and personality that Amitabh Bachchan so conveniently brought to the scene. Trying to keep at heels with the Big B, Khan seems to be taking up anything and everything that comes his way.

Manisha gets a new Aussie pet

manisha_koirala.jpg
Manisha Koirala has yet another love interest. If she signed the same number of movies as that of her boyfriends, she would have made a huge fortune and probably some more fame. The woman’s a pathetic mess and she has to start accepting it. The latest is an Australian bred desi dude, quarter her age and sniffing around for an entry into Bollywood. Quite apparently, she is not interested in the m or marriage and she is also comfortably open about the idea.

Sweta got engaged

sweta_keswani.jpg
Marriages, commitments, engagements, all in the season. Some getting hooked, some getting hitched. So why should Sweta Keswani not do the same? And get engaged she did. To Alexx O’Neil, some big dude American BPO guy. It all happened suddenly and in haste because both the families got together and the obvious happened. The Sindhi (I am guessing because of the –ani) family must have coaxed the goras to take in the girl or scram from the nation. All said and done, they preponed their engagement very recently.

Abhishwarya awaits the big day

abhi_ash.jpg
Aishwarya and Abhishek’s wedding dates are being steadied at the Bachchan residence. Everyone’s waiting on their heels for the event which is being compared to Prince Charles’ and Lady Diana’s wedding. And the location is but of course, Rajasthan. This year Rajasthan tourism is kicking in some excellent deals! First, Liz Hurley and Arun Nayar and now this one. Also, the location is being used by every filmmaker for their new movies. Haven’t I told this to you all before? Bollywood is ALL about following trends!

Kunal’s a fast one

kunal_hattrick.jpg
Kunal Kapoor does not like his long hair. Then why is he still having it? Because girls still love guys with long hair, why else! There is the new movie of his: Hat trick. As the name goes, it is a movie about cricket and got a bunch of old actors and Rimi Sen. If you looked really close, you could see some similarities between him and Dhoni. That could be the reason he was considered for the movie.

Dino’s high acting skills

dino_morea.jpg
Dino Morea can act, people! So says even his producer. I mean, he will not be taken in any movie just for his looks any longer. He will be taken into a set, given two and a half hours to get drunk and then roll camera! Oh right. That’s the hitch, by the way. He can act, only after drinking. Seems he recently wanted to do some scene in some movie and he took his sweet time, got tully over the producer’s money (who would refuse free daaroo) and he did the scene. Supposedly the best scene of Dino’s up to date.

Hrithik going to bare from within

hrithik_roshan.jpg
If they can do in movies, why cant they do it in advertisements; so sang the pretty men of Bollywood. With make-up laid on thick, muscles flexed out obvious and glances thrown at sharp, quite a few of our dudes from the drama have shown that in the end, it does matter what you wear inside. And that defines you as a man. Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol and Salman Khan did it. No, it’s not a ‘s’ initial fetish, because they have found the latest star that would knock you off!

Bachchan sings cricket praises

amitabh_bachchan.jpg
For the last World Cup, India made this really nostalgic song with all of the Indian media figures and making every sore throat to sing. It gave us goose bumps and we sure did kick some ass until almost the end. So what if we didn’t get the cup, we won the most important match, didn’t we! This year, the craze is back and the film kingdom are not going to be sitting still. As in patent with Bollywood to hype up every year, this year has the dhamaka deal with (no applauding the right guesses) Bachchan saab.
